For over 40 years, Edward has guided the planning, design, financing, and management of construction, renovation, and capital renewal projects.
He was elevated to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects to recognize a career of developing sustainable, affordable, high-quality facilities, including their initial financing and renewal over time.

Edward’s career has taken him from the National Park Service, where he preserved nationally significant historic landmarks, to leadership roles at prestigious academic institutions. Throughout, he has remained committed to advancing the field of architecture and sharing knowledge through numerous presentations, publications, and teaching positions. Edward has managed complex financing strategies, including the issuance of taxable and tax-exempt new money and refunding bonds. He also has developed innovative approaches to facility renewal, ensuring the long-term sustainability of campus facilities.
In 2022, Edward founded Edward Adelman Associates, LLC, to provide strategic advice to owners of higher education and cultural facilities. To date, this consulting has included the review of deferred maintenance studies; the preparation of multi-year, phased facility renewal plans; the preparation of a detailed, comprehensive undergraduate housing study; pre-construction guidance for a major donor-funded campus living and learning center; and the development of a sustainability program.

Corrected deferred maintenance and guided the planning, design, construction, financing, and management of 6,500 new beds for undergraduate housing on nine campuses (an increase of 60%). Developed the first qualifications-based selection process for architects and construction managers in the Commonwealth.

Managed an ambitious program of campus planning and reinvestment, including deferred maintenance and a campus physical master plan. Point person for student housing village and donor-funded art museum and student center. Oversaw 250-person staff responsible for Facilities, Public Safety, Purchasing, Dining, and Transportation.
Director, Facilities Salem State University.
Directed the growth of the former State Teacher’s College, including the acquisition of two new campuses, leading to the achievement of University status. Responsible for managing a staff of 100 Physical Plant employees to maintain existing facilities and for planning new ones.
Director, Physical Plant Babson College.
Responsible for investment in a 100-year old campus and new facilities to support growth in student enrollment, including student housing, campus center, dining hall, and graduate school. Supervised 85-person union facilities staff.
Historical Architect United States National Park Service.
Served in the North Atlantic, National Capital, and Midwest regions to plan programs of historic resource identification, preservation, and interpretation. Work included building studies, restoration plans, construction supervision, and coordination with visitor service ranger programs.
